Road Running - Session Leaders
Please note the following and inform your runners/ take action/ note as appropriate:
Runners are responsible for declaring all relevant medical conditions on their application form and keeping this up to date.
Session leaders should ask if there are any medical/injury issues that they should be aware of before a session.
Session leaders must have access to emergency contact numbers for each participant whether this is via access to the membership information on their phones or by asking runners to complete a simple form before the session. All that would be required on the form is the runner’s name and an emergency contact number. To comply with data protection the forms should be destroyed after the session and not shared.
Session leaders should have risk assessments in place for all routes. This does not have to be done for every session but should cover the areas used.
Session leaders should be aware of the requirements for differing levels of emergency aid qualifications depending on the location of the session e.g. runs in remote locations will require a higher level of training than a session held on the grounds of a leisure centre where there would be trained staff nearby. Current Welsh Athletics guidance is summarised below:
Category A- session at a venue where there is an Emergency First Aider present with an anticipated response time of under 5 minutes. Requirement- Basic First Aid Training Certificate
Category B- session at a venue where there is not an Emergency First Aider present, anticipated response time between 10 and 30 minutes. Requirement- First Aid training Certificate
Category C- session involving a remote or hard to access location where there is not an Emergency First Aider present with an anticipated response time of more than 30 minutes. Requirement- Outdoor First Aid Training Certificate ( min. 2 day course)
